SACRED CONCERTS

Project Description

It is rare for a classical choir to turn its hand to jazz. As the Salzburg Bach choir (conductor: Michael Schneider) is rehearsing and working under the same roof as the Mozarteum University since autumn 2025, a collaboration with the Mozarteum Big Band, led by Christoph Pepe Auer, arose. It was a natural choice to dedicate themselves to a classic of the jazz repertoire: Duke Ellington’s “Sacred Concert”. Its ingenious combination of big band, choir, soloists and tap dancing brings together various stylistic devices and sonic elements into a cohesive whole. The programme also features Jukka Linkola’s piece “The Fulfilment of Love”, commissioned to him by the choir. As a further unifying element, Christoph Pepe Auer also composed ‘Serenity’s Harmony’ for big band to serve as stylish bridge.
