Defant explains that “the aim is to create a collective sound and musical style that doesn’t need sensationalism or bold solo spots. It emphasizes the idiosyncrasy of improvised music and free jazz but still finds a place for very elegant, creative and at times surprisingly harmonic sounds.” The session also came together in an unusual fashion. All the sounds were completely improvised in the studio, with sections then extracted to create the resulting tunes, with titles given at the end of the production process. The idea was to remain true to the music’s original intention even as the textures were refined.
