Sofia Labropoulou is a Vienna-based kanun player, composer, and improviser who bridges Eastern Mediterranean folk, Ottoman classical, medieval Western, contemporary, and experimental music. A classically trained pianist and percussionist, she moved to Istanbul in 2003 to study Ottoman music. She has collaborated with renowned musicians and ensembles worldwide and is the founder and artistic director of the concert series Unbounded Sounds in Vienna. Her first personal album Sisyphus (Odradek Records, 2020) gained international acclaim, and her upcoming album Spiral explores and opens new horizons for the kanun.
